Many people suffer from ingrown toenails. At our office we have a protocol for treating this condition that has proven to be very effective. First, we numb the toe with a local anesthetic. Next, we make a small incision in the side of the nail and carefully remove the piece of nail that is causing the problem. Finally, we place a small piece of gauze in the incision to help with healing and apply a Band-Aid. The whole process takes about 12-15 minutes.

Some things you can do at home to help your toe be more comfortable if you’re experiencing an ingrown toenail are:

-Soak your foot in warm water for 10-15 minutes 2-3 times a day

-Wear shoes that are roomy and comfortable

-Avoid walking barefoot

-Trim your toenails straight across, rather than rounding the corners
